      FAQs

Which insert is right for my horse?

In 2022, GreenGuard muzzles began featuring slots around the base of the basket. These slots accommodate muzzle inserts, which are designed to prolong the muzzle body's life and provide a softer, more yielding surface for aggressive grazers. There are two rubber varieties from GreenGuard: standard and "diet."

GG Equine also offers two varieties of leather insert, a tabless leather insert which can be made to work with any size GreenGuard muzzle, and a tabbed one for use with the horse-size. This video tutorial and this comparison chart give you a full, detailed evaluation of our entire line of inserts - rubber and leather - so you can make the best choice for your horse and their specific muzzle.

      My muzzle has no slots

Older-style (pre-2022) GreenGuard Grazing Muzzles do not have slots to receive muzzle inserts. We have a do it yourself tutorial showing how to adapt your muzzle to receive a muzzle insert. This works best with the tabless leather insert, though there are other options.

      Cleaning the rubber insert

The rubber GreenGuard muzzle inserts - both standard and "diet" - are made from a soft, pliable, rubber-like material. They are just as easy to clean as the muzzles themselves.

All you need is some water and a cloth to wipe away any debris that may get embedded into the insert in the course of normal grazing. We recommend rinsing and wiping away any grit or sand at every opportunity to prevent undue tooth wear.

      Use Inserts to Modify Intake

The "diet" rubber insert restricts grass intake by an additional 50% over the muzzle alone. Please make sure your horse is used to wearing and grazing with a muzzle before using the "diet" insert.

You can also adapt the "diet" insert to allow a little more grass for easy keepers who need additional grass restriction, but not as little as the "diet" allows.

All of  our leather muzzle inserts restrict grass intake a little bit more than the muzzle alone. You can further customize the size of the holes by placing a plastic sheet with your preferred  hole size between a leather insert and the muzzle. This technique works best with our leather inserts.

Can I Block All Muzzle Holes?

Is your vet or farrier coming and you have a bit of a reactive horse, or one who needs no grass leading up to a medical procedure? We have developed a way to block all holes in the muzzle temporarily using a plastic sheet.

      First GG muzzle insert

I first used the muzzle alone but still thought she maybe getting more grass than her other muzzles so I added the insert and she is doing great plus it adds a good 1/2-3/4” of less grass being nibbled and the short grass his where the most sugar is. SO I am very glad I ordered the muzzle insert.

Nancy, lots of folks use, but not a lot take the time to share thoughts on the standard insert, so thank you. Yes! Since the base of the muzzle is recessed to accomodate the inserts, using one absolutely helps to limit grass intake! Depending on how aggressive a grazer your horse is, it's also providing a softer, more pliable landing place for their teeth and prolonging the life of the muzzle body. Thank you so much for giving the insert a try; we're glad it's working for you!

Works well to repair muzzle “holes”

My mare ate through her muzzle but this has repaired the damage. My only complaint at first the insert seemed too thick for her to graze but now she’s broken it in and it’s working well. My gelding has now also eaten through his muzzle so I’m ordering another one. Thanks! Much better option than buying a brand new muzzle.

This is such valuable feedback! Thank you for taking the time to share it. Muzzle inserts (and muzzles with slots for them) are still relatively new to our product lineup. We are hearing more and more from customers thoughts very much like yours. For aggressive grazers, muzzle inserts mean the difference between a very replaceable item and a much more costly one! If you or your horses ever have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

      Muzzle replacement part

It has worked great for my horse. He wore down the original grazing guard basket. So I installed the center mussel insert replacement part. I watched your video on how to replace it and that helped a lot. It has helped control his insatiable appetite when grazing. Pat Culver

Pat, this is so great to hear. The muzzle inserts were designed to extend the life of GreenGuard muzzles. We're gratified yours is going to last that much longer with the insert. So much more cost effective than getting a new muzzle, especially this late into the season. Thanks so much for leaving a review. Reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns and thanks so much for supporting our woman-owned small business!

      Indestructible!

The original muzzle was very effective, but my persistent mare insisted on trying to chew through it. This insert stopped her completely. She doesn’t even try any more.
It was easy to install and is comfortable for her.

Heather, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with the GreenGuard muzzle insert! This is exactly the reason these inserts were created and the muzzle bodies themselves were redesigned to accommodate them. Aggressive grazers deserve a way to graze the way they want to without it meaning a new muzzle every season. An insert is so much easier and more cost-efficient to replace than a whole muzzle. It's fascinating to hear that it's curbing your mare's excesses into the bargain! We'd love to see a photo of your mare grazing in her muzzle some time! If you manage to get one you like, or if you ever have any questions at all about the muzzle, the insert, or anything related, feel free to send it along any time to support@gg-equine.com
